In September of 2024 Matt Mullenweg and Automattic were involved in an apparent conflict regarding WordPress and the open source project. Among the conflict, WP Engine’s customers were blocked from being able to download updates or plugins from the WordPress central repository, which allows site administrators to easily click “Update Plugin” among other features.
